What Makes a Design Feel Like It Will Stay?
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what makes a design feel like it will stay.
Not in the sense of trend forecasting, or predicting what will sell next season, but something more subtle, the feeling that a piece belongs somewhere long before it arrives there.
There seems to be a shift happening in fashion and home décor right now. Instead of trying to look brand new, products are leaning into that warm, familiar feel. It’s less about shouting for attention and more about fitting naturally into someone’s life..
Designs that last tend to have some common threads. They’re all about restraint and a sense of space, with details that maybe take a moment to notice. These prints don’t scream for attention; they just quietly grab it.
In a world where design moves at lightning speed, longevity becomes a form of luxury.
Heritage references naturally live everywhere as a kind of visual memory. Florals that feel collected rather than styled. Motifs that could exist across decades without needing explanation.
I’ve found myself drawn to older source material more than usual lately, Victorian botanical studies, traditional furnishing prints, pieces of patterns that were never designed to be trends in the first place. There’s a quality in that work that feels especially relevant now.
For brands, this often translates to selecting fewer prints, those that can coexist across categories, colorways, and seasons without losing their essence. It’s about creating artwork that supports a collection rather than defining a single moment within it.
This philosophy is at the heart of my own work: developing prints infused with soul, with the hope that they feel just as natural a year from now as they do today. Not timeless in the traditional sense... just comfortably enduring.
Not timeless in the traditional sense. . .just comfortable staying!
