Designing a new collection is one of the most exciting parts of the process, but choosing the right prints can sometimes feel a little overwhelming right?! Whether you're adding a one off print mid season, or need to define a whole season, the print you choose plays a huge role in defining the overall aesthetic.
So here are my TOP five key things I always recommend keeping in mind when you're searching for that perfect print to tie everything together:
1. Really Know Your Brand’s Story
Before diving into any design decisions, think about the story you're trying to tell with your collection. Is it soft and romantic, bold and edgy, or minimal and modern? Your prints need to align with the overall mood and vibe of your brand. For example, if your brand's identity is rooted in vintage inspiration, a floral print with a nostalgic touch will complement the rest of your designs perfectly.
2. Color is King!
Colors can make or break a print. Make sure the color palette fits with the rest of your collection and your brand's identity. It’s important to strike the right balance between trendy and timeless, so consider how the colors will be perceived. Sometimes a pop of color or an unexpected combo is exactly what will make the print stand out.
3. Scale Matters
I can’t emphasize this enough – the scale of your print is crucial! Larger prints can make a statement but may be overwhelming, especially on smaller pieces like tops or kids’ textiles. Smaller prints are more versatile, but you want to ensure they don't get lost in the overall design. Think about how the scale will translate across different garments or home pieces.
4. Trend vs. Timeless
While it's tempting to jump on every new print trend (hello, oversized botanicals!), make sure it’s something that resonates with your audience and fits with your brand’s long-term aesthetic. Trends can be fun, but timeless prints are what people keep coming back to season after season. Finding that sweet spot between the two is where the magic happens.
5. The Feel Factor
Lastly, consider the "feel" of the print in relation to the fabric or material you’ll be using. Is the print soft and flowing enough for lightweight textiles, or does it need to hold its own on a heavier fabric? Will it be printed on a fabric which requires color limitations? A print that feels cohesive with the material it’s printed on will always elevate the final product.
At the end of the day, choosing the right print is all about creating harmony between your designs, your brand’s identity, and your vision for the collection.
